Compassionate Guidance on Pet Quality of Life
All too quickly our young puppies and kittens grow and age and pet owners are faced with end-of-life-care decisions to be made. Schertz Animal Hospital’s compassionate staff understands the stresses and emotional turmoil surrounding evaluating your pet’s quality of life and will be here to help you through the process.
As pets age, their needs change, and our veterinarians have established recommendations for senior pet care. Aging pets can deal with more illnesses and are more susceptible to injury and diseases such as pet cancer. The typical pet aches and pains can often be managed, but when quality of life begins to decline, it can be hard to know how to respond.
Quality of Life
There are many ways to evaluate a pet’s quality of life and oftentimes looking at just one indicator doesn’t give the full picture. While there is rarely a “right” answer on when quality of life is no longer good, the following guidelines from the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement can help in making a determination.
- Difficulty breathing—Can the pet breathe properly? Is oxygen supplementation necessary?
- Pain management—Is the pet’s pain well managed?
- Hunger—Is the pet eating enough? Does hand feeding help? Does the pet need a feeding tube?
- Hygiene—Is the pet able to urinate and defecate and require minimal help staying clean? For cats, are they grooming themselves?
- Happiness—Does the pet express joy and interest? Is the pet responsive to family and toys?
- Mobility—Can the pet get up without assistance? Does the pet want to go for a walk? Is the pet having seizures or stumbling?
- More good days than bad—Do good days outnumber bad? Is a healthy human–animal bond still possible?
Pet Hospice and Euthanasia
Some pet owners find themselves in a situation where pet hospice is a viable option while other situations require euthanasia.
Schertz Animal Hospital’s veterinarians will respect your decisions and work with you to ensure your pet’s comfort. We have a special, private room where you can take as much time as you need with your pet before and after euthanasia, and we will make arrangements so you can take your pet home for burial or we have a cremation service. Ashes can be returned in an urn or wood box or ashes will be communally spread.
Memorializing Your Pet
We understand the grief that comes from losing a pet and the importance of being able to keep their memories. Our staff can make an impression of your pet’s paw for you to keep in memory of him or her. We also have a pet loss library and a pet memorial wall for your use.
The veterinarians and staff of Schertz Animal Hospital are here to help you through the difficulties surrounding end-of-life care. Please contact us with any questions.
