VRVC_iStock_000025891371_LargeFor those who adore fur companions, there are few things more devastating than finding out you’re allergic to animals. In the United States, roughly 3 out of every 10 people suffer from pet allergies, begging the question: what are the options when it comes to pets for allergy sufferers?

The Hypoallergenic Pet: Fact or Fiction?

Before we go any further, it’s important to dispel the myth of the hypoallergenic pet. However, this label is often applied to animals who produce fewer allergens. Also, while pet hair is often pinned as the culprit for cat and dog allergies, it’s actually animal saliva, urine, and dander that are to blame.

Since the skin of all mammalian pets tends to flake off, there will always be some level of risk when it comes to pet allergies. However, there are some types of animals that have been known to produce fewer reactions, including:

  • Sphynx cat
  • Kerry blue terrier
  • Standard poodle
  • Bichon frise
  • Labradoodle
  • Portuguese water dog
  • Chinese crested dog
  • Schnauzer
  • Balinese-Javanese cat
  • Cornish and Devon rex cats

Exotic animals such as lizards, snakes, birds, and tropical fish also make great pets for allergy sufferers.

Keep in mind, much of the decision relies on the severity of the allergy. Fortunately, there can be changes made at home to help accommodate allergy sufferers and their love of pets.

Pets for Allergy Sufferers: Tips and Ideas

Sometimes, people develop pet allergies or sensitivities later in life. Others already live with a cat or dog companion but have gone years without being formally diagnosed. This can be an especially heartbreaking since a bond has already been formed with his or her fur friend.

The good news is that many allergy sufferers can manage their symptoms while making changes within the home to reduce their exposure to dander. These changes include:

  • Understanding the specific allergens that are your triggers (factors such as cigarette smoke, pollen, dust mites, mold, etc.)
  • Working to remove these additional allergens through the use of air purifiers and hypoallergenic bedding and pillows
  • Keeping at least one room in your home off-limits to your pet
  • Using a high quality HEPA air filter to reduce airborne allergens
  • Bathing your pet at least once a week
  • Vacuuming and dusting your home frequently (pay close attention to fabrics and upholstery)
  • Washing your pet’s bed or blankets weekly
  • Asking your doctor about any new treatments that may be helpful
